Hearing Aid Programming in Atlanta, GA

Hearing aids that seem too loud, too soft or just not quite right may need an adjustment. Audiologist Dr. Maria Wynens fine-tunes your hearing aid settings for comfortable listening in the places you spend your time.

The Atlanta Hearing Doctor provides hearing aid programming and adjustments from our office at 5885 Glenridge Drive #155, Atlanta, GA 30328, in Sandy Springs, serving patients from across the greater Atlanta area. Audiologist Dr. Maria Wynens has served patients since 1988 and takes the time to understand how your hearing aids are working for you in everyday life.

Hearing Aid Programming with Dr. Maria Wynens

Hearing aids are programmed to your hearing, and those settings shape how everything sounds, from a quiet conversation at home to a busy restaurant. Programming begins at your hearing aid fitting, when your hearing aids are set to match your hearing test results.

Your needs can change over time. You may notice that some sounds are uncomfortable, that conversation is harder to follow in certain places, or that your hearing aids no longer feel right for your daily routine. Programming adjustments let Dr. Wynens fine-tune your settings based on what you tell her about your listening experience, as part of ongoing hearing aid care.

When a Hearing Aid Adjustment May Help

Your hearing aids may be working as designed and still not feel right. An adjustment may help if:

  • Sounds seem too loud, too soft or unnatural
  • Your own voice sounds different or uncomfortable
  • Speech is hard to follow in places that matter to you, such as restaurants, meetings or family gatherings
  • Everyday noises, such as dishes or traffic, feel too sharp
  • Your hearing or your listening needs have changed
  • You are still getting used to your hearing aids and something does not feel right
Sudden change in your hearing? If you notice a sudden loss of hearing, especially in one ear, it is not a sign that your hearing aids need reprogramming. Contact your doctor the same day or seek urgent care. Call 911 if hearing loss comes with signs of a stroke, such as sudden numbness or weakness, trouble speaking or a sudden severe headache.

Programming, Fitting or Repair?

Not sure which visit you need? Here is a quick guide:

  • New hearing aids: If you are choosing hearing aids or just received them, your hearing aid fitting and follow-up visits are where programming begins.
  • Hearing aids that are not working: If there is no sound, whistling or distorted sound, start with hearing aid repair.
  • Hearing aids that work but do not sound right: A programming adjustment is often the right next step.
  • A change in your hearing: An updated hearing test helps guide any adjustments.

If you are not sure, call us and we will help you choose the right visit.

What to Expect at Your Programming Visit

If your hearing aids are not sounding the way you expect, request an appointment or call (404) 252-7528.

Tell us what you are noticing

Dr. Wynens asks where and when your hearing aids are not working well for you, such as conversations in noisy places, sounds that feel too sharp, or how your own voice sounds. Bring your hearing aids with you.

Adjusting your settings

Based on what you describe, Dr. Wynens fine-tunes your hearing aid settings. If your hearing may have changed, she may recommend an updated hearing test first so adjustments are based on how you hear today.

Reviewing the results with you

She talks with you about the changes, how to use any programs for different places, and whether a follow-up visit would help as you try your hearing aids in daily life.

Getting the Most from Your Adjustments

A few simple habits can help you and Dr. Wynens get the most from each visit:

  • Wear your hearing aids regularly, so your brain has time to get used to the new settings
  • Make a note of specific places or situations where listening is hard, and what you hear there
  • Give each adjustment some time in your daily routine before deciding how it works for you
  • Keep your hearing aids clean and charged or with fresh batteries, so problems with the device are not mistaken for problems with the settings
  • Mention any changes in your hearing, health or daily routine

Many hearing aids also let you change the volume or switch programs with a button or a smartphone app. App controls work alongside the settings Dr. Wynens programs. If you find yourself changing them often, that is a good reason to ask about an adjustment.

Questions

Hearing Aid Programming FAQs

What is hearing aid programming?

Hearing aid programming means setting your hearing aids to match your hearing and listening needs. Your hearing aids are first programmed at your fitting, and later adjustments, often called fine-tuning, help them stay comfortable and useful as your needs change.

How is a programming adjustment different from my hearing aid fitting?

Your fitting is where new hearing aids are set up for you, programmed to your hearing test results and checked for comfort. A programming adjustment is for hearing aids you already wear, when they need to be fine-tuned for how you hear and live today.

How do I know if my hearing aids need an adjustment?

Common signs include sounds that seem too loud or too soft, trouble following speech in places that matter to you, your own voice sounding unusual, or changing the volume often. If your hearing aid has stopped working or is whistling, start with hearing aid repair instead.

Can you adjust hearing aids I bought somewhere else?

Please call our office at (404) 252-7528 and tell us the make and model of your hearing aids and where they came from. Our team will let you know whether Dr. Wynens can help with your hearing aids.

Do I need a new hearing test before an adjustment?

Not always. If your hearing may have changed, or it has been a while since your last hearing evaluation, Dr. Wynens may recommend an updated hearing test so your adjustments are based on how you hear today.
