Tips for Maintaining Your Hearing Aids

Do you want to get the most out of your hearing aids, get the best quality sound, and prolong the life of your hearing aids? There's just a few simple steps to maintaining your hearing aids so that they meet your needs and function at full capacity. You're enjoying clear hearing so don't let that slip through your fingers! Here are some tips to help you maintain your hearing aids.

Cleaning Your Hearing Aids

The most important thing you can do for your hearing aids it to keep them clean and dry. Your ears are exposed to substances like dirt, dust, and moisture that will cause damage to your hearing aids. Many of the common problems you'll experience with your hearing aid can be solved by removing dirt, wax, and moisture before they have a chance to buildup. Cleaning your hearing aids every morning or evening is a quick chore that will give you reliable and long-lasting hearing. Check for ear wax buildup in the receiver. This can clog the hearing aid, causing feedback when you wear them. Clean with a soft, dry cloth, focusing on any vents to make sure there are no blockages. If any particles are stuck to the hearing aid, you can use a gentle cleaning brush to make sure you have it squeaky clean. Never use water to clean your hearing aids!

Weekly Cleaning

Cleaning the earmolds every few days will remove any buildup of wax or dirt, and will keep your hearing aids in ship shape. You can remove the earmolds and wash them with water or with a very mild soap to fight tough dirt. Make sure they are completely dry before reattaching them to the hearing aids.

When to Take Your Hearing Aids Out

Hearing aids cannot be worn in the shower or when swimming. Water causes damage to hearing aids, so always remember to take them out. Forgetful? Put a sticky note on the mirror to remind yourself to pop them out before showering. Take them out before a work out, since sweat is just another form of moisture that can damage your hearing aids. Remove them before applying hair spray, perfume or insect repellant.

Night Time Storage

What's the best way to store your hearing aids while you're sleeping? In a dry, safe place well away from kids and pets. Never store your hearing aids in the bathroom where it's damp, and always store well away from water. Direct sunlight should also be avoided. To get the most out of your hearing aids, always open the battery door at night. This will prolong the battery life, and dry out any moisture that has built up during the day.

Consider investing in a drying kit. The best functioning hearing aid is a dry hearing aid. Storing them in a hearing aid dryer overnight makes it easy to maintain your hearing aids. Simply remove the batteries and put the hearing aids in the dryer overnight.

Batteries

Batteries need to be at full strength for your hearing aids to work properly. If you're experiencing problems with your hearing aids, try replacing the batteries. On average, they last from a few days to a couple of weeks. Keep spare batteries with you at all times. If you're at the office and your batteries run out, going home for batteries might not be a good option. You don't want to be stuck at work without being able to hear, so always carry an extra set.
